This is a research study being conducted to improve our knowledge and understanding of a disease called influenza, which can cause symptoms like fever, cough, runny nose and sore throat. The main goals of this study are as follows:
  1. To identify the type of influenza virus most prevalent in the Macha area and understand if the virus has any features that makes it more likely to spread quickly. This information may help to develop new ways to prevent, manage and treat people with flu
  2. To see if our current influenza tests do a good job of detecting influenza
  3. To understand how the immune system responds to infections from the flu virus in patients who are very sick and others who are not very sick.
  4. To understand how much the new coronavirus disease (COVID-19) that has spread across the world is affecting people in Zambia
